The best way to win the game is to stay ahead of it. The game is Instagram and the winner is you (if you read this). Our inhouse psychics* have dusted off their crystal balls and discovered a few interesting little Instagram insights for 2020.

*When we say psychics we actually mean highly informed, digital marketing specialists.

Here’s what we’re predicting Instagram’s going to throw at us in 2020 -

Interactive Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories officially launched in 2016 as a way of keeping followers updated with daily activities. Since then, Instagram Stories has evolved to offer more interactive options, such as Ask a Question, add Clickable Stickers, Question Stickers, and so on. In 2020 Instagram Stories are only set to get even more interactive, so you can connect on an even deeper level with your audiences. Romantic, we know.

New ways to use Instagram hashtags

We all know Hashtags are the key to a killer organic Instagram growth strategy. Hashtags can be followed just as accounts can, getting your new posts in more users’ feeds (which is why you’re reading this blog in the first place). In 2019 we also saw Hashtags in Stories, which was pretty damn awesome. You can now use up to 10 different hashtags in each story. In 2020 you’ll be able to see Instagram post insights and get reports that will indicate the number of Hashtag impressions. This will be an invaluable tool, one that you should use to inform your Hashtag strategy.

Augmented Reality

Instagram adopted filters after a wave of popularity on Snapchat. Augmented Reality (AR) filters have become particularly popular. The biggest celebrities are now launching their own AR face filters. If you are an agency or brand this is a bandwagon you definitely want to hop on. Be one of the first to use AR filter adaptors.

IGTV

Instagram TV (IGTV) has been growing in popularity since its June 2018 launch. Unlike YouTube and other video platforms, IGTV dimensions are a verticle format. This makes it specifically suitable for a mobile-only audience. As if you needed more reason to believe mobiles are dominating the game.

Recently Instagram announced that you can post the first 15 seconds of your IGTV video as a story, allowing users to play the full video if they want more. It’s obvious that Instagram wants to encourage people to create video content on their mobiles and keep users on the platform for longer. We’re not claiming to be fortune tellers or anything, but we’re predicting that Instagram will be doubling down on the IGTV interactive features in 2020.

Instagram Messanger Chatbot

Messenger chatbots have revolutionized how we communicate with customers on Facebook. The use of a “bot” to automate simple tasks and receive information faster has allowed some (proactive) companies to rapidly scale and offer support 24/7 in their businesses.

In 2020, we’ll see Instagram Direct Messages open up to platforms like ManyChat and Chatfuel bringing a new level of communication to clients. This is one Instagram trend we’re super excited about and you should be too!

Instagram Shopping

Shopping on Instagram has come a long way in 2019 with the addition of shoppable influencer posts, direct product links in the Instagram Explore Tab, the Instagram Collection Tab to save products a user might want to buy later, and the Shopping Tab on Instagram Business Accounts. In 2020 you can expect Instagram to further focus their efforts on the shopping experience creating new ways for consumers to find new products. It’ll be better for consumers and better for businesses, win-win. We love it when everyone’s happy.
